About Us

Grassroots Solutions is an engagement strategy and evaluation consulting firm, majority-owned by women, with a diverse team based in eight states and the District of Columbia who come from backgrounds in advocacy, organizing, campaigns, and philanthropy. Since our founding in 1999, we have worked with a wide range of philanthropic, electoral, nonprofit, and advocacy organizations in the U.S. and other countries. Our client partnerships are deeply grounded in our experience as both practitioners and evaluators. Our team’s collective experience ranges in scope, geography, and sector, including conducting state-focused organizing and capacity building assessments, providing strategic insight to initiatives and campaigns, acting as long-term learning partners for philanthropies and their collaborators, and conducting large-scale program evaluations.

Our clients are impatient for change in the communities they serve. So are we. To us, evaluation is leverage that helps unstick people and organizations in the face of both complex problems and opportunities. At its most potent, we believe we can contribute to the learning necessary to achieve the transformative changes—dismantling structural and systemic racism, realizing a healthy and equitable democracy, focusing climate action on the people most affected, and building power in communities disproportionately affected by generations of economic and other forms of injustice—that we and our clients seek. We are guided by a set of values and commitments that include learning for action, centering people and relationships, and service to equity and justice. We hold ourselves accountable through our interactions with our clients, their collaborators, and each other. In addition, it shapes our contracting processes with subcontractors and vendors, operations, and internal professional development.

About the Job

Grassroots Solutions is looking to hire a Senior Strategist, Evaluation to help manage and ensure outstanding client service for our evaluation and learning practice. In this role you will work on a team with principals and project managers to design and implement evaluation and learning activities about engagement strategies and philanthropic efforts. The position offers variety not only in the type and length of evaluations that will be worked on, but in the tasks that will be performed. Our client partnerships include participatory, developmental, formative, summative, and social justice-focused evaluations of programs and strategies that are often emergent and involve an array of participants and contributors.

You can be based anywhere in the U.S., but there is an expectation of participating in internal meetings and with clients based in other time zones and countries. In your role, you will help clients who share our commitments to building healthy, just, and equitable communities in the following ways:

  • Contribute to nurturing internal firm culture that is fun, creative, supportive, and allows staff to bring their whole selves to the workplace
  • Bring illuminating, sometimes challenging, discussions related to issues of equity and racial and gender justice to discussions with clients and colleagues
  • Work in partnership with clients to develop theories of change, evaluation/MEL plans, and landscape assessments
  • Serve as the primary point of contact, manage workflow, and cultivate client relationships
  • Work with project team(s) to manage expectations and responsibilities with clients and project team members and leaders, including timeline, roles, deliverables, and communications
  • Design, lead, facilitate, and conduct data collection and analysis in a collaborative and participatory manner
  • Guide the evaluation product development process, including working closely with clients to assess types of deliverables, and working with outside vendors
  • Produce and present high-quality, compelling products (including but not limited to reports) and feedback mechanisms using straight forward language and visuals
  • Facilitate reflective conversations and learning experiences to interpret evaluation data with clients and other participants and contributors
  • Leverage your professional and lived experiences to support clients and help set them up for maximum success to make data-informed decisions and put learning into action
  • Work with principals to cultivate and expand business

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience leading the development of a variety of learning and evaluation products (e.g., storytelling, dashboards with data visualization, accessible reports) aligned with clients’ information needs, strategies, and shared norms and ways of working
  • Experience leading the design of effective engagement initiatives or campaigns – legislative, electoral, civic engagement, movement, or other power building efforts – that reflect an understanding of engagement best practices, emerging trends, and digital tools is a plus
  • Ability to collect, track, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data (e.g., through surveys, literature review, interviews, focus groups, online interactive conversations, and more) in ways that involve diverse participants and contributors
  • Background conducting structured research and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to develop strategies and plans, and to assess the effectiveness of engagement initiatives or campaigns in real time
  • Adaptability and flexibility in balancing multiple projects and a fast-paced, evolving portfolio of projects
  • Demonstrable experience in leading, planning, and overseeing complex projects under tight deadlines using workflow tools
  • Excellent communications skills, including strong facilitation, editing, written, listening, and oral
  • Enthusiasm about the role of learning and evaluation to inform engagement strategy and help advance racial, gender, economic, and climate justice
  • Ability to move between high-level strategy and implementation, with demonstrated experience to analyze data and identify strategic implications
  • Experience in advocacy, policy and policymaking, civic engagement or organizing a plus
  • Willingness to co-learn with clients and co-workers
  • Sense of humor and appetite for innovation and creativity
